Maternal micronutrients requirements are increased during pregnancy due to an increase in body tissue reserves and metabolic demands, and the development of placenta and the foetus. The aim of this study was to determine the levels of some micronutrients and the incidence of anaemia among pregnant women at their first antenatal booking in order to identify those at risk of nutrition related complications in Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti, Ekiti-State, Nigeria. This case-control study consists of a total of 330 women between the ages of 21 and 40 years. The study subjects were grouped into 165 pregnant women and 165 non-pregnant controls. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect socio-demographic data. Blood samples were drawn from each of the participants and iron, zinc, copper, and magnesium levels were determined using Atomic Absorption spectrophotometry. Ferritin was determined using Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Transferrin level, total iron-binding capacity, and full blood count were also analysed. Serum iron, total iron-binding capacity, transferrin, copper, magnesium, and zinc were significantly lower in pregnant women than non-pregnant controls (p <0.05). Serum ferritin showed no significant difference between both groups (p = 0.858). The overall incidence of anaemia at first booking was 6.1%. Pregnant women present with significant reductions in serum trace minerals and haematological parameters at their first antenatal booking. Subclinical micronutrient depletion is widespread prior to routine care. Early booking and evaluation of maternal micronutrients is key to better pregnancy outcomes.
