Climate change has been associated with extreme weather events that threaten food security. There is a paucity of studies documenting the exposure of low-income households in Africa to extreme weather and consequent food insecurity. We investigated the extreme weather experienced by low-income households in the preceding 12 months and their relation to household food security in five communities in Ogun State, Nigeria. We carried out a cross-sectional survey in 5 Low-income Communities: Imewuro, Ajebandele, Magbon, Babalawo, and Oni in Ogun State. The 372 households were selected by multi-stage random sampling. Primary data were collected through a 12-month weather recall and food security module based on the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS). Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Sixty-one percent of the households experienced extreme weather in the past 12 months. Heat waves (64.8%) and prolonged dry spells (equal to or more than 6 days) (50.8%) were the most common. There was a significant difference between communities in the proportion of households experiencing extreme weather (χ2=27.9; p<0.001). Household food insecurity was high, with 64% of the households moderately or severely food insecure. Household food insecurity was higher in households that experienced extreme weather compared to those not exposed in the past 12 months (79.4% versus 35.4%, respectively; χ2=42.6; p<0.001). Exposure to extreme weather was associated with household food insecurity after controlling for socioeconomic variables (OR=3.8; 95% CI 2.4–5.9). Extreme weather may be an important determinant of food insecurity among low-income households. Their exposure should be considered in community nutritional surveillance and adaptation programmes to minimise the impact of climate change.
