Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of climate change on yam production and traditional Ledu yam title attainment in Yakurr Local Government Area, Cross River State, Nigeria and its implications on traditional socio-cultural institutions like the Ledu Yam title attainment. The study adopted a descriptive survey and correlational research design approach. Structured questionnaire was used in collecting data from yam farmers and Ledu yam title holders who constituted the study population. Descriptive statistical and regression analysis were used in analysing the collected data. The findings revealed that climate variability such as rainfall variability, temperature increases and extreme weather events significantly affect yam production and consequently Ledu Yam title attainment in the study area. The study therefore established that a relationship exist between climate change and yam production and consequently Ledu title holding. It is recommended that climate resilient practices as well as irrigation farming be adopted in the study area to reduce the dependence on climate.
