Volume 1, Issue 6 - May 2026
This research sought to understand the link between sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) and performance at International Breweries Plc, Onitsha, Anambra State, Nigeria. It examined the impact of green procurement on economic performance, waste management on environmental performance and supplier collaboration on social performance. The beer industry is a resource-intensive sector with significant water and energy consumption and high levels of waste and emissions, hence the need to study it in the context of sustainability. The research was grounded in Stakeholder Theory, which emphasizes the importance of organisations managing the demands of stakeholders to gain legitimacy and enhance performance. This study used a quantitative cross-sectional survey methodology, focusing on 178 staff from procurement, supply chain, operations and environmental management. A total of 162 responses were received, giving a response rate of 91%. SPSS version 26 was used for descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. This revealed that green procurement positively affects economic performance (r = 0.68, p < 0.01), waste management has a positive impact on environmental performance (r = 0.72, p < 0.01) and supplier collaboration enhances social performance (r = 0.65, p < 0.01). In total, 72.4% of the variance in organisational performance could be explained (R² = 0.724, F = 82.34, p < 0.001) by SSCM practices. The research finds that sustainable supply chain practices are important in improving various dimensions of organisational performance. It suggests that organisations should develop green procurement policies, enhance waste management strategies using circular economy approaches, encourage greater collaboration with suppliers to enhance social performance, and prepare sustainability reports according to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards.
