Volume 1, Issue 6 - May 2026
This study empirically determined the effect of external resource inflows on unemployment in the West Africa sub-region from 2009 – 2023. The study used net official development assistance, private remittances, and foreign direct investment as proxies of external resource inflows while unemployment was measured by unemployment rate. The study made use of panel data which were retrieved from World Development Indicators of the World Bank, African Development Bank, and national statistical agencies. System Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) approach was the major technique of data analysis adopted. The findings showed that net official development assistance has a negative and significant effect on unemployment rate in West Africa sub-region; private remittances has a negative and significant effect on unemployment rate in West Africa sub-region; foreign direct investment has a negative and significant effect on unemployment rate in West Africa sub-region. Based on the findings, the study concluded that external resource inflows play a vital role in job creation and unemployment reduction in the West Africa sub-region. Based on these findings and conclusion, it was recommended among others that government should establish transparent monitoring and evaluation frameworks will help track aid effectiveness, prevent leakages, and align aid projects with national development priorities
